I wrote this song in September of 2020 as part of a weekly scripture challenge I was doing with a friend. Every week, one of us would pick a scripture passage and then we would each write something revolving around that passage. That week, I picked Psalm 23. I did a demo recording at the time and then pretty much forgot about it.

Fast forward to September of 2023 and I and my brother and his family and my sister were sitting with my mother in her hospital room in her final days. I recalled that Psalm 23 had always been a favorite of hers and was quietly reading that scripture to her. At that point she was pretty much non-responsive but I believe she was able to hear us. Then I recalled the song I wrote three years prior and found I had that demo recording with me. I asked my brother and sister if it was ok with them if I played it for our Mom and they said sure. Just as I finished, a nurse walked in and there wasn’t a dry eye in the room. My sister-in-law told her we were going to need a minute. My Mom passed away the next day.

Fast forward again to March of 2024 and a friend suggested that I should record the song "for real", and that I should ask some friends to play parts or sing harmonies with me. Originally, I thought I’d just put all the parts together in one version. But as I got tracks from friends and family, they all had their own style and personality and I felt they would be better served as a collection of duets with these dear friends and family members.
